Resource or individual? How personal and external factors influence commercial software development at a team and individual level.

Abstract

Software development is driven by people. The format through which they carry out their work varies, with some working individually and others in teams, some working in the same office and others working via remote, global teams, and all using a range of different tools. A team is only ever as good as the people within it, and the people are only ever as good as their environment allows.Existing research into the effects of individualism in commercial development teams is disjointed between research areas. This leads to knowledge gaps, lack of understanding on how issues interplay, and recommendations on change have been limited in scope. This study aims to explore how individual factors influence the success of software development teams, with the goal of assembling a holistic understanding of how individual factors influence teams.
