IoD Day 2 – Debate on Data as an Asset?

Is data an asset?

Data to information to intelligence

Data is a fact in a context or with a meaning

Information is data linked to a request

Intelligence is information with a use.

Can data be valued? Do the normal free market formulae for price discovery apply?

Somewhat inconclusive result.

However, the protagonists did seem to move their positions toward each other, particularly from the position on the one hand that data cannot be valued by market based price discovery processes and on the other that it might be that it is more the use of data that is of value, rather than the un-used data itself. It was a great discussion with many contributions from the participating audience.
