AI and Games: What’s the Deal with Pac-Man?

As part of my teaching in the final year module Game Behaviour, I am prone to writing articles over on my own site

During the opening weeks of the class, we talk about the challenges in modelling the game world in order for it to be computationally tractable to search.  As a result, I am prone to talking about Pac-Man and to an extent Ms. Pac-Man given it is relatable to those being introduced to the subject.  In addition, there is actually a lot of research in Pac-Man within the AI field, given it is actually a rather interesting problem.
